Technical Manager - Geocycle
Geocycle is a waste specialist whose core business is the processing of flammable and hazardous wastes and the transformation of these wastes into alternative fuel and raw materials for use in cement kilns. Geocycle is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Cement Australia and is based in Dandenong. Wastes treated are typically by-products associated with the manufacture of common consumer items. Typical wastes and by-products treated include:
• Petroleum products, including used oils, greases and distillation residues
• Resins, paints, inks and solvent based materials
• Chemicals, including pesticides and herbicides
• Aluminium smelting residues
• Industrial combustion by-products
As materials consolidated for processing are highly variable, it is important that accurate identification is undertaken for the purpose of transforming this material into a tightly specified end product. Techniques including Bomb Calorimetry, ICP-OES, GC, UV-Vis and classical wet chemistry are used to analyse and characterise incoming materials. The site is compliant with ISO9001(quality), ISO14001 (environment) and AS4801(health and safety).
The Technical Manager is a newly created position that will report directly to the Operations Manager of Geocycle. The position is responsible for the effective control of waste inputs to the plant so as to ensure chemical safety and compatibility in receipt and processing of all wastes, whilst meeting QC requirements of the cement kilns. This includes operations and performance of the laboratory from a technical and compliance perspective; involvement in laboratory and process R&D; staff management, recruitment and retention for the laboratory and associated areas.
The successful applicant will have a relevant qualification (for eg chemistry, process or chemical engineering) and a background in laboratory operations from the petrochemical, waste-management or other relevant industry. Experience in organic chemisty and the management of staff is essential along with well developed communication and interpersonal skills and exposure to management of cultural change or business improvement.
